Naval War College Students Visit Russian Submarine
On 14 October, 2004, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Adam Samuels of the Naval War College in Newport, RI, sent this message:
Dear Russian Sub staff and SARATOGA Foundation,
Thank you for providing the opportunity to visit your museum last week and hold one of our "off-site" classes in the battery compartment of a Soviet Cruise Missile Submarine. Student-initiated "off-site" classes provide a rare opporunity to take the Naval War College classroom discussions out of the lecture hall and take advantage of the hospitality and abundance of historical sites in Rhode Island.
Last week, our "Strategy and Policy curriculum" (Military Strategic History) seminar discussion focused on the Cold War between the USSR and USA between 1945 and 1991. What better location to enhance the learning environment for the twelve students and two instructors than onboard a Russian Sub! You could almost hear the Soviet National Anthem (heard so prominently in THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER soundtrack) playing in the background as we squeezed between pipes, valves, bulkheads and periscopes. One of the students even brought Dunkin' Doughnuts and a jug of Dunkin' Doughnuts coffee so we would not forget that we were still in Rhode Island.
Special thanks to Christia at the Russian Sub Museum for helping make the special arrangements for our visit duing the middle of the week. Many of the students later said they did not realize how easy it is to visit your museum an hope to bring friends or reliatives back for a more detailed visit on their next trip up to Providence. Thank you again.
