Underwater assessments continue.
Tuesday, May 1, 2007: A diver attached additional mooring lines to the sub
today as required by the Coast Guard before we were able to cut or slack the
remaining mooring lines that were under under tension. When we slacked those
lines the sub did not move an inch--but the piers moved back several inches into
their original position!
As it happens, the lines were not holding up the sub. The opposite was
happening; the strain from the weight of the sub was pressuring the piers, which was
relieved by our action today. That confirmed our belief that the sub is
firmly planted in the muddy river bottom, with a port list of about 50 degrees.
Wednesday (tomorrow) AM a crane will come in to pick up the brows and
anything else that might obstruct the salvage operation. We should be ready to dive
on Thursday to start a full salvage survey.
