Navy Divers Enter Sunken Russian Sub

Navy Divers began diving operations on the former Soviet submarine Juliett 484, performing initial surveys and inspections of the interior of the hull as it lay on the bottom. Navy and Army divers, along with federal, state, and local authorities, are participating in a joint service operation in the Providence River to raise the sunken submarine at Collier Point Park in Providence. The photos below were taken by Navy Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Eric Lippman, and are used with permission.

Navy Reserve Navy Diver Seaman Jesse Kole, assigned to Naval Experimental Diving Unit, does an inspection dive. Navy Divers enter the Providence River to begin diving operations on the wreck of the former Soviet submarine Juliett 484. Navy Diver 1st Class Paul Averill, assigned to Naval Special Warfare Group One Logistics Support Unit, waits at the forward access panel.
