Subject:               English

 

Objective:            Students will learn the meanings of specific terms common to submariners.

 

Materials:             Glossary of Submariner Terms found in the Russian Submarine Museum Curriculum Guide

 

Task:                    Students will demonstrate knowledge of submariner terminology by matching words to definitions.

 

Activity:               The terminology match may be accomplished individually or played as a game in class. A student will be asked to correctly match the word to its definition as outlined in the Glossary of Submariner Terms with points awarded for correct answers.

                          

Circumstances of performance: This student work is to be produced under the following work conditions:

VOCABULARY MATCH

___ "THE PICKLE"                                      a. The internal hull in a submarine which is cylindrical and built to withstand heavy pressure.

 

___ BROACH                                             b. The hull of a submarine that is thinner and which holds the ballast tanks.

 

___ ANGLES AND DANGLES                       c. To surface without intent. To stick the bow out of the water when rising to periscope depth.

 

___ EXTERNAL HULL                                d. A strange creature who fouls things up - a seagoing "Gremlin"

 

___ DOWN THE THROAT                           e. The "walls" of a submarine

 

___ TRIM DOWN                                        f. Aboard United States submarines, the switch that raises and lowers the scopes.

 

___ PRESSURE HULL                                 g. A critical exercise for submarines embarking on a patrol. Once in deep water, the sub dives deep and then comes back up, both at a steep angle. Anything that is not properly secured will fall down, making some noise. These must be corrected before a sub is fully rigged for silent running.

 

___ GANOMIE                                           h. All openings between the sub's compartments are closed off so that if there is a leak in one, the water will not flow into the rest of the submarine and sink it.

 

___ BULKHEADS                                       i. The most difficult of torpedo shots the sub's torpedoes are shot at the very narrow bow of the enemy as it heads directly toward the submarine.

 

___ RIG FOR DEPTH CHARGE                     j. Reduce buoyancy until the ship is running virtually awash.
