Objective: Students will learn the meanings of specific terms common to submariners.
Materials: Glossary of Submariner Terms found in the Russian Submarine Museum Curriculum Guide
Task: Students will demonstrate knowledge of submariner terminology by matching words to definitions.
Activity: The terminology match may be accomplished individually or played as a game in class. A student will be asked to correctly match the word to its definition as outlined in the Glossary of Submariner Terms with points awarded for correct answers.
Circumstances of performance: This student work is to be produced under the following work conditions:

VOCABULARY MATCH
___ "THE PICKLE" a. The internal hull in a submarine which is cylindrical and built to withstand heavy pressure.
___ SCOPE b. The right side of the boat.
___ STERN c. Where the captain stays to direct a submerged attack.
___ EXTERNAL HULL d. The front of the submarine.
___ BOW AND STERN PLANES e. The "walls" of a submarine
___ PORT SIDE f. Aboard United States submarines, the switch that raises and lowers the scopes.
___ PRESSURE HULL g. The rear of the boat.
___ GANOMIE h. All openings between the sub's compartments are closed off so that if there is a leak in one, the water will not flow into the rest of the submarine and sink it.
___ BULKHEADS i. Guiding fins that determine the submarine's angle of dive and permit the submarine to stay at any desired depth under water.
