Objective: Students will develop an understanding of submarine terms
Background: Submariners have developed their own peculiar vocabulary over the years incorporating nautical terms with names for new technology as well.
Submarines in the United States Navy have traditionally been named for fish or ocean creatures and famous Americans. Admiral Rickover, in an attempt to gain support from members of Congress, began the tradition of naming submarines after cities (initially from the district’s of key Congressional representatives)
Materials:

Submarine Museum’s Word Scramble Sheet
Word Search – United States Navy Submarines
Single sheet of blank, graph paper
Single sheet of blank, lined paper
Task:
Conduct
a word search of the names of submarines.
Create a word search of submarine related terms.
Activity: 1. Students will create a word search based upon a submarine theme
that includes at least fifteen of the submarine related terms found on the
Russian Submarine Museum’s Word Scramble Sheet.
2. Students will list on a second sheet of paper, the words used.
3. Students will complete a word search of the names
of submarines from the United States Navy’s past.
Circumstances of performance: This student work is to be produced under the following work conditions:

9. Word Search. Make up a word search using a piece of graph paper or a grid that you create. Chose a theme (submarines) and a title that reflects the words that can be found, such as weather, school, or seasons. Include at least ten words in your search. Ask friends or family to find the hidden words.
