Word Scramble

Objective:             Students will develop an understanding of vocabulary associated with submarines and underwater exploration.

 

Background:         Submariners have developed their own peculiar vocabulary over the years incorporating nautical terms with names for new technology as well.

 

Materials:             Russian Submarine Museum’s Word Scramble Sheet

                            Separate sheet of blank, lined paper  

 

Task:                            Scramble and unscramble words associated with submarines.

 

Activity:                Students will be provided with a list of terms associated with submarines. They will “scramble” each individual term as well as the order of the words on a separate sheet of paper. Each student will place his/her name on the top of that sheet. Once accomplished, the teacher will shuffle and redistribute the papers. Students will be asked to unscramble the word puzzles they receive.        

 

 

Circumstances of performance: This student work is to be produced under the following work conditions:

                           8. Scramble. Word scrambles are a type of puzzle. For example, the letters “nanaba” can be unscrambled to spell the word “banana.” Choose a topic such as sports, books, or Girl scouts. Scramble the letters of five or ten words on that topic. Copy your puzzle and try it out on your family, friends, or troop. See who can unscramble the most words in two minutes.
